How to Prepare English for SSC CHSL Tier 1 2019 (Topic-wise)

In SSC CHSL 2019 exam, the section of English Language is going to play a very significant role. In last few years, this section has posed many problems for candidates and has been considered to be very challenging section. In this article, we will discuss the preparation strategy of preparing this section topic-wise. Before discussing the strategy, let us list out the important topics which have been prominently asked in last few years and these topics are:-

IBPS1. Fill in the blanks
 
(i) You should first read the statement carefully and then choose the word from the given options which is suitable for the answer.
(ii) The students can use the elimination method by simultaneously checking the best option for both the entries.
(iii) You should also ensure that the inserted word helps you to read the sentence correctly. 
  1. Spotting Error 
The students are advised to develop good grammatical sense in solving “spotting the error” questions.
Tips to solve Spotting Error questions
(i) You should first read the sentence carefully. In many cases, the errors are detected easily, if you have good grammatical sense.  
(ii) The students should also carefully check the subject-verb agreement while reading the entire sentence.
(iii) In case you fail to detect the error then you are required to read each individual part of the sentence and then closely examine which part of the sentence has error.
  1. Sentence Correction
The students are required to find the correct alternatives which may improve the sentence. In some cases, the correction is not required then your answer should be “No improvement”.
 (i) After locating error, you are required to eliminate all of the choices which have that error.
 (ii) You should be able to identify the differences among the given choices and eliminate those choices which are grammatically incorrect alternatives.
  1. Synonyms and Antonyms
(i) You are advised to develop habit of reading English newspapers daily and find out typical words. Do find its synonyms, antonyms from dictionary and try to use these words in sentence formation. It will enhance your word power and vocabulary.
(ii) You should make this a daily practice and this will make you perfect in answering questions in the exam.
  1. Idioms/Phrases & One Word Substitution
(i) Your good grammatical sense will be of great help in solving questions from these topics. You should try to solve previous year papers and try to attempt maximum mock tests to master it. Sometimes, the questions are repeated from previous year papers and so solve them seriously.
  1. Spelling Mistakes
The candidates are required to learn some rules for spelling errors from standard textbooks. Once again, your good grammatical sense will work wonder for you, so learn these rules properly. 
  1. Cloze Test
In SSC CHSL exam, you will be provided with a passage with five blanks. You are required to fill these blanks with the given options.
 (i) In the given passage, generally all the sentences are logically related to each other and this logic will give you idea of appropriate word for the blank space.
(ii) You should try to find the positive and negative words and this will help you to fit the words in the blanks.
  1. Reading Comprehension
Step I: The first basic step is to identify the tone of the paragraph which will help you in answering questions easily and quickly.
Step II: You should then read the questions first and then you will be able to understand what is to be answered.
Step III:  You should thoroughly read the first and last paragraph twice.
The students are advised not to skip the comprehension part as the passage asked in the exam is easy and are very scoring. You should enhance your reading speed by becoming regular reader of English newspapers, books, novels etc.
